A year and a half ago I was making a Jupiter icon for the hard drive of one of my computers. Then I got carried away and made a bunch of icons for the other planets and released them all to the net. That was the beginning of icons.cx, and it窶冱 still one of the most popular sets.
In order to prepare the set for Mac OS X, I had to remake it from scratch (since I didn窶冲 keep my full-size originals around窶ｦ oops). But that窶冱 okay, I窶囘 been meaning to improve on it anyway. :-) Now there are more celestial bodies in the set, and everything窶冱 been tweaked to look better.
The set is divided into two versions; one has all the planets and moons sized to fill the 32x32 (or whatever size) frame, and the other has some of the icons reduced so that there窶冱 some semblance of relative size. (Obviously, I can窶冲 really do relative sizing. If Jupiter filled the frame, Earth would be less than a pixel wide!)
Most of these icons are available from NASA窶冱 Planetary Photojournal website, which is a great resource for space images. Double-click the included bookmark file to check it out.
If you窶决e running Mac OS 9, you can easily apply these icons to your files, folders, and disks by simply double-clicking the one you want to use. The included iconSetter applet will then let you choose an object to paste the icon onto.
These icons are absolutely 100% free. Use them on your system, your webpages, your CD-ROM distribution, your refrigerator, wherever. Do not redistribute altered verions of the set without permission.
